St. Mark’s Basilica, Venice, Italy
by Mike Adams, 1st year IDSVA student
This summer I was in Venice with IDSVA, and like much of our Italian residency, amazing places and experiences kindled new ideas. Walking into St. Mark’s Basilica from the dazzling Venetian light is entering another world. If that were not disorienting enough, centuries of settling have made the floor undulate like waves upon the sea, but frozen and mosaic tiled. Above, there is another sea, this one opulent and heady, encrusted and glittering, with spectacular mosaics lining the domes of the ceiling.
