Tentatively scheduled to begin summer 2014, the Istanbul residency will be for second-year students, who will travel either from Berlin to Paris to Istanbul, or from Berlin to Venice to Istanbul, depending on the year (Venice Biennale or Paris). Topological studies will be designed in relation to Berlin or Paris, in both cases taking into account Istanbul as an east/west nexus and as a city that cuts across all histories of art and culture, including the vibrant contemporary scene that has come to define today’s Istanbul.
Arranging a new residency site takes long planning and much discussion, plus preliminary scouting of the site. Establishing working connections with local scholars, art historians, philosophers, artists, architects, curators, gallery directors, and cultural studies people is essential to the process.
