IDSVA Opens a New Path to the PhD for BA and BFA Graduates

October 27, 2026

Since its founding in 2006, IDSVA has been at the forefront of doctoral education for artists and creative thinkers, offering a distinctive, non-studio, research-based PhD in Visual Arts: Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Art Theory. Now, emerging artists and scholars completing their BA or BFA can apply directly to the PhD program, without first earning a master's degree. This new opportunity makes rigorous doctoral study more accessible to a new generation of artists and creative thinkers.

The IDSVA PhD is designed for artists across disciplines, curators, educators, and creative scholars, bringing their unique ways of seeing, questioning, and thinking into rigorous philosophical inquiry. Our program combines interactive online study with intensive international residencies, creating a community of scholars who travel, learn, and think together across continents.

Why choose IDSVA?

Global community. Low-Residency. World-renowned faculty.

IDSVA’s pioneering curriculum—fusing interactive online education with intensive residencies—allows working art professionals to pursue rigorous advanced scholarship without having to interrupt or abandon their teaching careers, art practice, or other professional responsibilities. You don't have to choose between your current work and your intellectual growth—our program is designed for both.

Study art and philosophy in the places that shaped it, with the people reshaping it.

“I have always believed that artists deserve rigor too, in their education. For 20 years, IDSVA has shown what becomes possible when artists enter into sustained dialogue with some of the world’s leading philosophers: they become thinkers capable of changing how we see and understand the world. Opening a direct path from the BA and BFA to the PhD means a new generation of artist-philosophers can begin that work sooner.”

— Dr. Simonetta Moro, President, IDSVA
